Cloud Computing-Why You Should Second Guess It

We all have been hearing about cloud computing and how it saves the world. But most people don’t realize what can all go wrong with these ever popular services, so here we will be taking a look at why I don’t recommend them. First we will start off with their claims and then give you the not so pretty side kept hidden from you.

Apple Hackers Find Loophole To Attack Mac OS

App Stays On Hold For You

Sadly we all know that when you call a customer service line, chances are you will be put on hold. Some have even reported to be hold for hours at a time. However, the iPhone has a new app that will stay on hold for you and let you know when you are connected to a real person.

It is called FastCustomer and supposedly it forces the call center to pick up-then puts them back on hold. Here is the official description.

The average person wastes 60 hours on hold every year. We wanted a better way to get to a real person when you want customer service.

Simply click a button and we’ll connect you without waiting on hold.

Please note: This app requires your phone number to function.

FastCustomer is similar to LucyPhone and Fonolo, but we navigate the phone trees for you

It costs only $0.99 cents and has good reviews. I have no idea how it works, but hopefully one day I will get to try it. I sort of hope they make a version of it for Android. I think it could work out well, but I suspect that call centers will get smart about it quickly.

Commodore 64 Makes A Come Back

Commordore 64

Good news for Commodore 64 fans out there! The Commodore 64 is back, and this time it is more advance. The new Commodore(be aware that it isn’t exactly the same as the old version) has the following specs.

  • 2 GB DDR Memory(can be expanded to 4 GB)
  • Intel dual-core 525 Atom Processor
  • Nvidia Ion 2 GPU
  • DVD-rom(Blu-Ray optional)
  • Muliti-Card Reader
  • 5 USB ports
  • TV/Monitor support
  • Commodore OS(supports Ubuntu & Windows)
  • Will support old school Commodore games

Be aware that as of now it comes with Ubuntu disc, but they will mail you the Commodore OS and game emulator once it is ready. You can also turn it into a regular computer by installing Windows. You can buy a build it yourself version($250.00) or a pre-made one(between $595.00 to $895). Also as a quick reminder, it does not come with a monitor, so you have to buy a new one. It will be released this Tuesday(April 12th) online, no plans for retail stores as of yet.You can buy it via Commodore USA.

What are your thoughts on the new Commodore?  Are you happy that they are bringing it back or do you think this ship has sailed a long time ago? I am excited for it, I think it could help usher in previous standards used a long time ago.

Motorola Xoom Fails To Impress

Motorola Xoom

As a fan of Motorola, I am sad to say that their attempt at tablets seems to have failed. The popular bashing topic the Motorola Xoom has only sold 100,000 tablets since it has come out, which is low when you compare it to the big iPad. Granted, the Xoom does come at a high cost for those who want it. But so does the iPad. So what is the real reason why it has failed?

I think the main issue is that nobody wants to buy what they deem the iPad knock off. As I have said before, Apple has a cult like following-and while I am a fan of some Apple products I do know most fans will not be seen without the latest Apple gadget. So that sadly displaces the Xoom, which is a prominent example of another tablet that is not Apple. It has nothing to do with the tablet itself or Motorola, at least thats how I take this.

I personally would love a Motorola Xoom, but then again I suppose it would be nice to compare how it stands against other tablets. I will still stand by Motorola no matter what, and I will say that I think people need to find room for other tablets outside of Apple.

What are your thoughts about this? Have you played with the Xoom? Do you think people are obsessed with the Apple brand? Let me know in the comments.

Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest Trailer

The UK is gearing up for the release of Lego Pirates of the Caribbean game next month(May 13th), and they released a new trailer! It is based on the previous Pirates movie Dead Man’s Chest.

What do you think about the trailer? Are you hoping to get a copy of the game? I am excited for its release, in fact I sort of want to get my hands on  a copy of it for review. Maybe I will be able to do that. It will be released in the US on May 10th, and May 13th in the UK.

How To Restore Your Operating System?

Owning a computer means at one point or another you will need to restore your operating system. While you could take it to a repair shop it could cost you over a $100.00, plus they will push other products on you. Thus is why every computer owner must know how to restore your own computer. So lets get started on how you do that.

1-Back Up Media

If you use your computer for a lot media you will want to back it up. However, you hopefully have already backed it all up by the time you read this or do it pretty often. You will basically have 3 options on how to back it up. DVD-rom, USB memory stick or external hard disk. Each one has its pros and cons, which I will get into in another post later on. But back up everything you want to save before you start restoring your system.

2-Locate Your Restore Disc/OS Disc

Next, you will need to find your OS disc or your restore disc that came with your system. However, some newer models come with a section of your hard disc-but at this stage it is still more rare. Please keep in mind that if you do not have a recovery disc from your manufacture you can either order one or buy a copy of OS. Please remember to find out if you have 32 or 64 bit and order the correct one. Or else it will not work. You can also download a legal copy onto an external drive or memory stick, but be sure to right down the activation/product key first.

3-Boot From Media Source

Boot from your media source. You can do this by connecting the device before you boot and wait for a menu to ask you where you want to boot from. Select that and start the restoring process.

4-Follow On Screen Instructions

You will go through a few menus at first, this includes selection a  partition. Delete the biggest one and then create a new one for the fresh copy of the OS to be installed. This could take a while depending on how big the partitions are and how fast your CPU is. After that it will start copying all of the files onto the new partition, which means you just sit and wait.

5-Restart

Once all of the files are copied, you will be asked to restart your computer. Select yes, then boot from your internal hard disc and let those files to be copied.

6-Select Settings

After that you will be asked to select your settings and personalize your computer. After that you will be required to active it either via phone or internet(at least on Windows).

7-Install Divers

Next you will need to install your drivers, which can be a pain or easy depending on how you restored your OS. If you are using a restore disc from your computer manufacture, you likely got a disc with the driver. If not, you will have to find each driver manually online, download and install. The second option is a pain, but can be done in one day. Be sure to know your hardware and what OS version you have before downloading any drivers.

Once all proper drivers have been installed and you have no conflicts with hardware, you are done with restoring your system. It can be done typically in 2-5 hours depending on a couple of things. Please feel free to ask any questions that you may have or if you want more examples, tips or even a video.

No 3D For Next Nintendo DS

They say don’t put all your eggs in one basket, yet Nintendo still did with the Nintendo 3DS and it appeared to have failed them. Nintendo has since pulled back from the 3D craze and are now saying that the next DS will not have a 3D feature, nor will the next Wii.

Here is what one of Nintendo 3DS hardware producers(Hideki Konno) had to say about it to CNN.

I think at Nintendo, we realize that any sort of goggle-type 3D technology was not going to work. In order to make 3D technology viable with video games, we thought we needed to have glasses-free 3D.

How do you feel about Nintendo backing away from 3D so quickly? I am sort of glad to see that they realize that it is more of an issue than a cool feature to have. I doubt that it will sell as well as Nintendo’s past console have.
